Shantell Martin's maze will encourage meditation in Times Square

“I attended several 10-day silent meditation retreats,” Martin told me via email, recalling when she took up the practice while living in Japan in the 2000s. I haven’t participated in one of those over the past few years, partly because I’ve found that walking and drawing provide a similar sense of mindfulness and space.”

-Shantell Martin

The artist had collaborated with the presenter of the new project, Times Square Arts, back in 2020 for the nonprofit’s “Midnight Moment” digital art program. Her upcoming creation, a maze titled The Path: A Meditation of Lines, will guide viewers through the bustling Manhattan center on a meandering journey. Martin's design, envisioned in her stream-of-consciousness approach, showcases her signature style with looping lines, cheerful faces, and precise text. The longer one gazes at the artwork, more visual elements start to emerge, such as mountains, sailboats, and stick figures.

  • Attendees will stroll along the artist's initial route while listening to her voice.

  • Dedicated walking sessions will be provided for the local Times Square community, including theater staff and sanitation workers.

  • The Path LOCATED IN THE Main Square of Times Square and will be open 24/7 until November 20, 2024.
